Eliminating Pay Phone Toll Fraud at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan

چکیده
During the late 1980s and early 1990s, international toll fraud at the pay phones of the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan was an entrenched criminal enterprise involving millions of dollars per year. People wanting to call outside the U.S. could make contact with a "hustler" at the terminal who knew how to obtain illegal access to toll lines, and who would connect the callfor themfor a fraction of the usual cost. This business helped to attract many criminals to the building, and toll fraud materially contributed to the terminal's unsavory atmosphere. It proved highly resistant to police action and was only eliminated during a comprehensive effort by the management to rid the building of crime. Various measures recommended by two separate groups of consultants were implemented, including a reduction in the number of pay phones, restricting access to high-risk pay phones outside rush hours, removing the phones' international dialing capacity and disabling the telephone keypads to prevent the routing of fraudulent calls through the exchange systems of private businesses.

Emergency Response Planning for a Potential Sarin Gas Attack in Manhattan using Agent-based Models
In this paper, we describe the agent-based modeling (ABM), simulation and analysis of a potential Sarin gas attack in the Port Authority Bus Terminal in the island of Manhattan in New York city, USA. The streets and subways of Manhattan have been modeled as a non-planar graph. The people at the terminal are modeled as agents initially moving randomly, but with a resultant drift velocity towards...

The collection of vehicular tolls at Port Authority tunnels and bridges is one of the most important operations conducted by the police personnel. More than 250 traffic officers are utilized, and the payroll costs exceed a million dollars annually. In staffing its toll plazas the Port Authority attempts to handle traffic with a minimum number of toll collectors consistent with uniformly good se...
متن کاملDon’t trust POS terminals! Verify in-shop payments with your phone
Despite the advanced capabilities of the chip-enabled, debit and credit cards, fraud in payment transactions has not diminished it has shifted. The reason lies in the lack of a trusted communication path between the smartcard and the cardholder. More explicitly, because users have no means of verifying the authenticity of the Point-of-Sales (POS) terminal, they do not know how much they are abo...
متن کاملIn silico Study of Toll-Like Receptor 4 Binding Site of FimH from Uropathogenic Escherichia coli
Introduction : The innate immune system as the first line of defense against the pathogens recognizes pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) by Toll-Like Receptors (TLRs). Interaction of bacterial PAMPs by TLRs results in activation of innate and acquired immunity. FimH adhesin, a minor component of type 1 fimbriae encoded by Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) is a PAMP of TLR4 tha...
متن کاملSolving Bus Terminal Location Problem Using Simulated Annealing Method
Bus network design is an important problem in public transportation. A main step to this design is determining the number of required terminals and their locations. This is a special type of facility location problem, which is a time-consuming, large scale, combinatorial problem. In a previous attempt by the authors, this problem had been solved by GAMS, based on a branch and bound algorithm. ...
